Genie Joe’s

Pitching a strategic product concept to extend the Trader Joe's customer experience.

Project Summary

Trader Joe's has built an exceptionally loyal customer base through its unique in-store shopping experience, but the brand has little digital presence to support customers before or after they shop. Our team identified this gap and developed Genie Joe's, a strategic product concept designed to extend the Trader Joe's experience through personalized meal planning and grocery organization.

Rather than simply proposing a new app, we created a complete business case for the idea, including consumer research, brand positioning, implementation planning, financial projections, and an integrated marketing communications strategy all to demonstrate how the concept could realistically launch and create value for both customers and Trader Joe's.

The Challenge

Trader Joe's has built one of the most recognizable and loyal brands in grocery retail through its unique in-store experience. However, unlike many competitors, the brand offers little digital support before or after customers shop. We identified an opportunity to extend the Trader Joe's experience beyond the store by addressing common customer pain points, such as meal planning, grocery organization, and product discovery, all while staying true to the brand's playful, discovery-driven identity.

Reflection

This project challenged me to think beyond designing a product and instead consider what makes an idea viable for a business. I learned how customer insights, brand strategy, financial planning, and marketing all work together to turn an opportunity into a compelling proposal. It reinforced that successful innovation isn't just about having a creative idea—it's about building a solution that aligns with customer needs, business goals, and long-term brand strategy.
