At
age 6, Dylan Ames had played T-Ball and soccer, but really did
not have much interest in either. Our family stopped by the
local quarter midget track one evening after dinner to see a
friend's daughter run at Huntsville QM Track. While watching
the races, Dylan turned to me and said, "Daddy, I want
to do this". I had no experience with racing, but could
tell by looking around at the trailers, cars, equipment, etc
that this was not a minor step. I explained this was not like
buying a baseball glove; this was a pretty big commitment. Dylan
just repeated that he wanted to race. That was where it all
started.
We bought a Quarter Midget in early 2002 and started
practicing at the local track in Huntsville. We raced out first
race on March 23, 2002 starting out in the Novice class. We
ran in the novice class and on the 3rd race, Dylan won the race
and took the checkered flag for the first time. In those first
3 races, we were "lucky" enough to get our engine
protested 2 times. It seems the Ole Timers did not appreciate
the new kid winning - but it was only just the first of many
to come. We were then "encouraged" to move up into
the competitive class of Junior Honda. This turned out to be
a blessing. In 2002, Dylan went on to win 4 A-Mains and win
the Huntsville Quarter Midget Junior Honda Championship.
Dylan
went on to run Quarter Midgets for the next 3 seasons. During
the 4 years in Quarter Midgets, Dylan ran at tracks all over
the country to include Huntsville, AL; Cumming, GA; Indianapolis,
IN; New Smyrna, FL, Thompson, CT, Columbus, OH; St Louis, MO;
and many more. During this 3 years, the victories and championships
were racking up. Dylan was always a car that the competitors
hated to see enter the track. Dylan has always done his talking
on the track and the following accomplishments in 4 years, proves
it:
6 Championships
17 Event Fast Times
10 Track Records
44 A-Main Wins
In
the fall of 2005, Dylan was looking for a new challenge. A good
friend had started running Bandoleros, so this peaked his interest
into looking at those for the next step. Dylan started running
an INEX Bandolero at Atlanta Motor Speedway in November of 2005.
We ran the Winter Flurry, which was 3 oval races and 3 road
course races. Dylan finished 3rd in the series and started the
transition to bigger cars very well. Dylan went on to run the
Bandolero 46 times in the next 16 month period at Atlanta, Charlotte,
Nashville, Cordele and Kentucky Speedways. Dylan compiled the
following accomplishments in the Bando:
AMS Summer Shootout Hard Charger
5 Heat Race Wins
3 Feature Wins
National INEX Points - 20th
Alabama INEX State Points Champion
The INEX rules state that if you run the Bando
45 times in a 16 month period, you can move up to Legends Cars
at age 12. Dylan made this his goal so that he could shift gears
and experience the horsepower of the Legends. In January of
2007, we bought out a driver moving on to Late Models and were
set up ready to practice. Dylan ran approximately 1000 laps
in the first few months of 2007, so that on March 18, 8 days
after his 12th birthday, Dylan won his last Bando Race in front
of the NASCAR Busch Race crowd and then stepped into his legend
to race for the first time. Dylan drew the pole and led the
first 8 laps, till the track was oiled down and Dylan missed
a shift on the restart. Dylan finished 8th that night and his
Legends career has begun.
Dylan ran the Chargers Class of Legends cars in
Atlanta for the first 3 events at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS)
of the 2007 season. This class is a beginner class for the Legends
cars that AMS has to let drivers gain some racing experience
and get up to speed. Dylan ran his first Semi-Pro race on his
2nd Legends race in March of 2007 at Huntsville Speedway. The
goal for the 2007 summer season was to gain experience and respect,
working to run competitive and looking to win his first race.
The schedule for the spring and summer was set to include Atlanta
Motor Speedway, Huntsville Speedway, Music City Motorplex and
Kentucky Speedway. By the end of the summer, Dylan had exceeded
all his goals by winning 3 Feature events, 1 Heat Race Win and
finishing in the top 5, 15 times out of the 37 events run. In
addition, Dylan earned his first Legend Championship by Winning
the Legends Alabama INEX State Points Championship.
Since Dylan was running so well, we decided to
go the Legends Nationals held at Las Vegas NV. This turned out
to be the best 3 days of Dylan's Racing career to date. He ended
up qualifying 6th out of 73 Semi-Pro cars, finishing 2nd out
of 11 in his Heat Race and Finishing 4th out of 73 in Semi-Pro
for the Feature Event.
Dylan
returned home with a lot of Confidence and experience, ready
to race the PRI Show event in Orlando and run the Georgia Winter
Series. When all the racing was over, Ames finished the Series
with 3 Wins, 3 2nd place finishes and a total of 9 top 5's for
the 12 races. This consistency resulted in Ames receiving the
Championship honors on the Sprint Cup Stage in front of the
AMS crowd on March 8th in Atlanta. All this 2 days before Dylan's
13th birthday - what a birthday present! Dylan compiled the
following accomplishments in the Legend:
8 Heat Race Wins
4 Feature Wins
Alabama INEX State Points Champion
Georgia Winter Series Semi-Pro Points Champion
Ames is ready for an exciting summer of racing
where he will focus on the AMS Thursday Thunder Series, Lanier
Speedway, Huntsville Speedway and the Legends Young Lions Nations
and Semi-Pro Legends Nationals at Elko Speedway.
Bottom Line - Dylan loves to race and is driven
to finish in the front. He does his talking on the track, is
cool headed and focused on Winning. It will be interesting to
see what the future holds for Dylan - if nothing else; he has
great memories of time spent with his family doing something
that we all love to do - but you never know.
See you at the track!
